Wurm is an online medieval RPG sandbox. I came across it when searching for java sandboxes, and noticed Notch's name in the credits. For those of you who do not know, "Notch" is a man who developed a game called "Minecraft"
From there, I registered on their website, downloaded the game, and and clicked launch.
It took half an hour for the game to download all the files necessary.
Once I FINALLY got in, it immediately puts you into a server, which you will always be on.
At first, the tutorial was vague, but the Online community is superb, and extremely helpful.
It is somewhat difficult to get started, but once you do, you get rockin'
Note that there is NOT an offline mode, it is always multiplayer
